A bizarre twist has been uncovered in the story of a teenager who reportedly found a baby abandoned in the woods.
Police discovered the teenager fabricated the entire story – the newborn was actually her own and had been in her apartment the whole time.
On Wednesday, the 17-year-old made an emergency call saying she had been walking by a wooded area when she heard an abandoned infant’s cries.
The teenager claimed she found the baby girl, with her umbilical cord still attached, so she brought the child to her apartment in Houston, Texas.
The child was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital on Wednesday and given fluids due to appearing dehydrated, but was otherwise ok, ABC 13 news reported.
Days after the reported discovery, police noticed something wasn’t quite right about the teen’s story.
Officers soon learned the story was fabricated and the teen was actually the child’s mother who had given birth to the baby in an apartment hours earlier.
“We brought in investigators and quickly putting the pieces together, it just wasn’t adding up,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

“The initial reportee is actually the one who had delivered the infant. She had reported the infant was found here. That was concocted. That was not accurate.”
He said police are investigating why the young mother made the story up.
Police will also determine what charges would be applicable, as the baby was never actually abandoned but had been in an apartment with the mother until officers arrived.
