Shocking pictures show monster snake devouring possum

Graphic images posted to a Townsville snake catcher’s Facebook page show the moment a massive snake tries to make a meal out of a possum.

“At Rowes Bay this morning … Nature at its best,” Rhonda Laffin posted to the Townsville Snake Catchers page on Tuesday.

A series of images shows the process of the snake consuming the possum, opening its jaws wide to engulf the mammal.

The snake’s stomach distends as it starts to swallow the possum, making for a fascinating but slightly gut-churning sight.

The final image appears to show the regurgitated possum left abandoned by the snake, possibly scared off by the presence of the photographer.

Interrupted feed or a cases of eyes bigger than stomach and was too big to ingest???,” one person queried.

“Snakes have no means of defending themselves while swallowing a large meal and will sometimes abandon the prey if they feel threatened,” another observed.

“At least it looks he was left to go on his merry way.”

“When everyone goes the snake will return and take its kill if it wants,” one commentator suggested, while another simply wrote: “Welcome to Australia.”
