Shocking moment surfboards go flying off car roof racks on freeway

Dashcam footage captures the moment two surfboards went flying off the roof racks of a car driving along a busy Gold Coast highway, apparently secured with occy straps.

The 15-second clip shared the Dash Cam Australia Facebook page early Saturday afternoon showed a red Range Rover driving along the Pacific Motorway at Burleigh Heads, with two surfboards overhead.

The load quickly became unsecured when the boards began flying off the roof racks, onto the busy motorway near the David Fleay Wildlife Park exit.

Luckily for the other motorists it wasn’t windy enough for the pink and purple boards to have flown in their path, and instead landed on the roadside.

The Range Rover driver immediately realised the mishap and pulled over to the far left emergency lane as another motorist can be heard berating their method of securing the boards.

“Occy straps, you f***ing knob!” he yelled, before the 15 second clip ended.

Many of those who have viewed the clip on Facebook have ridiculed the motorist’s use of the straps to secure the boards, with one labelling it: “ the most Aussie thing out”.

Another asked: “Was the hand out the window a last ditch attempt to keep the boards grounded, or did they actually think they could drive home holding them on the roof?”
