A group of partygoers have been taken to hospital after a balcony collapsed at a beach house while they were celebrating.
As many as 15 people were on the deck of the home in Malibu, in the US state of California, and fell 4.5 metres on to jagged rocks below.
The friends had rented the home for a birthday party on Saturday night, however the owner of the home claimed she had only allowed six people to occupy the house.
She told local news station KCAL-TV an extra two dozen people had been at the house at the time of the incident.
Nine people were injured in the collapse, with four taken to hospital, though none were believed to be seriously injured.
One witness described it as a “freak accident”.
“(There were) probably like 10 people on the back deck and we heard a crack and I literally saw all of my best friends and my girlfriend fall 15 feet to the rocks,” the man told KABC.
“It’s a freak accident. Like, I don’t know how that happens. I don’t know how that happens. So, it is pretty cut and dry. The deck literally just gave out.”
L.A. County Fire Department spokesman Ron Haralson said it was lucky the injuries weren’t worse.
“We are looking at approximately 10 to 15 feet … Down below are jagged rocks, large rocks, so a very dangerous situation and fortunately, no one was hurt seriously or killed in this situation,” Captain Haralson told KABC.
