Watch: Shocking footage shows driver flipping car and smashing into toll booth while on drugs

A video of an intoxicated driver flipping his car before smashing into a payment booth on the M6 toll and landing on top of another vehicle has been released.

The dramatic smash happened when the motorist lost control of their car and collided with the toll booth in Staffordshire last August.

Police video shows how the car rolled onto its side, ploughed into the payment booth and crashed on top of a stationary car belonging to a driver who was waiting to pay.

Nobody was seriously injured in the crash despite the severity of the impact, although the toll booth operator was hurt and is still receiving treatment.

The 28-year-old driver, who cannot currently be named for legal reasons, was later arrested and charged with dangerous driving.

Swab samples showed he had several controlled drugs in his system at the time of the crash.

The man was later convicted of the offence but avoided jail after being sentenced to 14 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

He was disqualified from driving for three years, ordered to take an extended retest and told to carry out community service.

Inspector Sion Hathaway, from the Central Motorway Policing Group, said: "This was a terrifying incident for the individuals caught in the consequences of this reckless driver’s decision to take drugs.

"It is a miracle that no one was seriously injured.

"I hope that this footage presents a real warning to anyone who is thinking about getting behind the wheel in an intoxicated state.

"You not only risk your own life, but the lives of others."
