WATCH: Shocking footage of man lying on tracks seconds before train barrels through

Shocking footage has been released of a drunk man narrowly avoiding a fatal collision with an oncoming train as he lies down on the tracks just seconds before it comes hurtling past.

Derek Acton, 44, remarkably walked away unscathed from the near miss at Harlow Station in Essex, UK, but has been slapped with a $1,015 fine after facing Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on February 19 charged with railway obstruction, the Evening Standard reported.

CCTV footage shows Acton climbing down onto the tracks before stumbling precariously across them. He can then be seen lying down partially out of shot before the approaching train speeds passed.

As it exits the station, Acton can be seen lying motionless on the ground.

He was also handed a 12-month community order and was ordered to undergo 60 days of alcohol abstinence.

Police released the footage on Friday, warning of the dangers when stepping onto railway lines.

“Quite frankly, Acton is lucky to be alive," British Transport Police Inspector Steve Webster said.

"In his intoxicated state, he climbed down onto the tracks and lay in the path of a fast approaching train. His actions were baffling,"

“The railway is an extremely dangerous place to trespass. Every year my officers are called to tragic incidents where someone has died or seriously injured as a result of being hit by a train."
