Offender smashes up speed camera car parked on side of highway
A traffic camera car was completely destroyed by an unidentified offender while it was parked on a highway in Victoria.
Police are investigating the incident which happened on Wednesday night at around 8.50 pm on the Bellarine Highway at Point Lonsdale.
The offender approached the traffic camera car, a red Nissan, while it was stationary.
As a result, the windows of the car were smashed and then all four tyres were slashed, Victoria Police said.
Images shared by the police show the rear window was completely smashed in, while the front windscreen and the driver's window suffered severe cracks.
Fortunately, the camera operator was able to drive away and was not injured in the incident.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
In the past two months, there have been attacks on four speed camera vehicles, The Age reported.
“I just don’t understand why anyone is attacking someone who’s just going about doing their job, who’s trying to keep Victorian roads and the people who use them safe,” Superintendent David Griffin told the publication.
“It’s high-end criminal behaviour – we will not put up with it.”
