Tiger shark mauls whale carcass off NSW coast

A huge tiger shark has been filmed munching on a whale carcass in waters off Newcastle.

Local fisheries officer Ben Audet uploaded video of the shark enjoying its meal on Thursday.

Surfer Jesse Adams told Tracks Magazine that surfers were warned several times about the carcass before heading into the water.

“On the third time they (the fishermen) came in, it was a more of an order than a request,” Mr Adams said.

“Some of the locals were still keen to stay and surf. However when they showed us the footage on the boat it became a whole lot more real. I was pretty happy to be getting a lift in.”

The shark was estimated to be about four metres long.

According to Dorsal - Central NSW Shark Reports, the whale carcass was first spotted near Moon Island, south of Newcastle, drifting north on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, a group of nearly 60 bull sharks were spotted at Ballina, in the NSW Northern Rivers region. However, it didn’t stop 50 surfers remaining in the water prompting Ballina’s mayor to label them as ‘selfish’.
