Storms threaten FIVE Aussie states bringing rain, hail and strong winds

A cold front is sending storms into large chunks of eastern Australia this week bringing heavy rain, hail and damaging winds, especially to inland areas.

"Storms may tend severe in some areas," the Bureau of Meteorology said.

"Rain across saturated catchments may cause renewed flooding."

Thunderstorms, including hail, in eastern South Australia on Monday morning are moving into northwest Victoria and into southwest NSW. Tasmania will also be wet, while severe storms are likely about southwest Queensland with the risk of large hailstones and damaging winds.

Up to 15mm of rain will fall in Melbourne on Monday and Adelaide will also be wet. The rain will hang around to soak Melbourne again on Tuesday.

Warm temperatures, severe weather in western NSW

In NSW thunderstorms may hinder the inland districts and there's a chance they may become severe in the far west.

Sydney can expect a top of 21 on Monday and a slight chance of a shower in the afternoon. On Tuesday, there could be a thunderstorm in the north and west in the afternoon.

The threat of rain in Sydney will remain until Wednesday but come Thursday, the chance of showers will be upped to 50 per cent. Showers will linger around Sydney until Sunday.

There are several active flood warnings in place for inland NSW.

Canberra should also expect rain in the coming days, with a high chance of showers forecast for Monday and Tuesday, before the rain clears for the rest of the week.

Severe storms and showers threaten Victoria

Severe storms and heavy rain is possible in western and northern Victoria on Monday, most likely in the later afternoon and evening.

Places like Maryborough, Kyabram and Bendigo could see severe thunderstorms on Monday, the Bureau predicts.

A low-pressure system will sweep across much of Victoria bringing up to 10mm of rain to most regions. Melbourne is set to reach a top of 18 degrees on Monday, before dropping down to 16 on Tuesday.

Like NSW, there are several active flood warnings active across the state.

The wet weather is also expected to extend to Tasmania, with much of the island state seeing rain over the coming days.

'Eventful' end of August for Queensland

Queensland is also expected to cop some wet weather in the coming days.

Weatherzone said central Queensland has had a typical August in terms of weather, but with the trough pushing through the state from Monday to Wednesday, showers and storms in the west should be expected.

The Bureau said a trough system will bring some "unseasonal" rain and thunderstorms to Queensland's western central and interior districts on Monday and Tuesday.

The trough will weaken as it moves further east. The southwest of the state should be aware of the risk of severe thunderstorms on Monday.

There may be a light shower or two in Brisbane on Monday morning, with a high chance of rain on Tuesday.

Thunderstorms in the Northern Territory can also be expected. While Darwin will be spared, places closer to the Queensland border, like Avon Downs and Alpurrurulam might cop some storms on Monday.
