Parents who have young children with access to an iPad might be familiar with YouTube videos which show toys being unboxed or watching little ones engage in pretend play.
For everyone else, a seven-year-old boy is a prime example of why making these kinds of videos might just be a lucrative career change.
Ryan ToysReview has 17 million subscribers on YouTube and according to Forbes has topped a list of Youtube’s highest earners.
Forbes estimates the young boy, said to be in grade one, and his family have raked in about $30million (US$22 million) from June 1 2017 to June 1 this year through the channel.
And it seems like a pretty simple concept.
“Ryan loves Toys. Toys Review for kids by a kid!” the main channel’s description reads.
“Ryan will also love doing fun and easy science experiments for kids!”
“Most of the toys we used to review are being donated to local charity.”
Ryan’s main channel was launched in 2015 and in the past few years the videos have amassed close to 26 billion views.
Ryan ToysReview and a secondary page, Ryan’s Family Review, make most of their money from pre-roll advertising, Forbes reported.
It is reported that the remainder of the money comes from posts which are sponsored.
The founder and CEO of Bottle Rocket Management, which represents some digital influencers, Chas Lacaillade explained to Forbes why unboxing videos are so popular.
“Unboxing videos provide the proxy for actually experiencing the joy of receiving and opening something you really desire; this is especially true for items that are out of reach or unattainable.
“The next best thing to owning one is experiencing it virtually, seeing someone else play with it.”
A toy and apparel collection named Ryan’s World was also launched in August this year, which will contribute to earnings for the next financial year.
