Seven-year-old boy dies in boating accident

A seven-year-old boy has died in hospital after being thrown onto rocks in a weekend boating accident in Tasmania.

Archie James Green was being towed behind a boat on an inflatable tube at the Prosser River in the state's east on Sunday afternoon when he was tossed onshore.

He was flown to Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition.

The boat's driver, a 43-year-old man, lost control of the boat on a turn, police have said.

Archie, who is from Hobart, was on a trip with his family who are believed to have witnessed the incident.

"Our thoughts are with Archie's family and loved ones at this difficult time," police said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

The area is not a designated ski area and there is a speed limit of five knots within 60 metres of shore, police say.
