Sandro Mamukelashvili drills buzzer-beater to lift No. 16 Seton Hall past No. 21 Butler

It took a final prayer at the buzzer, but No. 16 Seton Hall’s losing skid is over.

The Pirates, behind a last-second buzzer-beater from Sandro Mamukelashvili, beat No. 21 Butler 74-72 on Wednesday night at the Prudential Center — a win that keeps them atop the Big East standings.

Butler jumped up to a 10-point lead early on Wednesday night, though the Pirates chipped away slowly until they built up a brief lead of their own in the final minute. Yet the Bulldogs, thanks to three 3-pointers in the last minute — including two from Sean McDermott — quickly tied the game back up.

With one last chance on the line, and only 0.6 seconds left on the clock, Seton Hall guard Quincy McKnight inbounded the ball to Mamukelashvili from the baseline.

Mamukelashvili, after cutting through the late, caught the lob in mid-air and expertly tipped it back into the hoop, sinking the game-winning shot to end their two-game losing streak.

“The play was to throw it up and let Sandro go get it and hope for a miracle,” Seton hall coach Kevin Willard said, via Adam Zagoria of the New York Times.

McKnight led the Pirates with 18 points on the night. Myles Powell finished with 16 points and six rebounds, and Mamukelashvili ended the night with 15 points while shooting 7-of-12 from the field.

Kamar Baldwin led Butler with 20 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the field. Bryce Golden finished with 17 points, and Aaron Thompson added 12 points.
