A 32-year-old man has threatened an older man with a chainsaw before lighting a fire and intimidating two NSW Rural Fire Service volunteers.

Police have accused Gavin James Gardiner of threatening the 64-year-old before lighting a fire behind the Elands property, northwest of Taree, on Friday.

When two volunteer firefighters came to the property to extinguish the fire, police allege Gardiner threatened them too.

The fire was extinguished and Gardiner charged with assault, intimidation, drug possession and damaging a property by fire.

He was refused bail on Saturday at Armidale Local Court, where he's due to reappear on Monday.

RFS volunteers were also allegedly intimidated at another Elands property on Thursday by a 44-year-old man.

That man is also before the courts.
