Two women who spent the night in bushland in Queensland's far north after becoming lost have been found safe and well.

The pair, both 21, were among a group of three hiking the Lambs Head trail in Mareeba, west of Cairns, when poor weather set in on Friday evening.

A 21-year-old man left them to return to their car and alerted police about 6.30pm. He was located about half-an-hour later.

Officers combed the bush on foot until midnight but could find no trace of the women.

The search for them resumed on Saturday morning, enlisting the help of GQAir, Far North District police officers and the State Emergency Service.

Their efforts focused on the understanding the three walkers became separated near Davies Creek Road and the Kennedy Highway.

The women were spotted from the air just before 10am and winched to safety.

Police say they did not sustain any serious injury.
