A teenage kayaker has been found dead in southern Tasmania after going missing overnight.
Valentine Bester, 19, had set off from Roches Beach, east of Hobart, in a 'sit-on' kayak around 11am on Thursday and was intending to reach Lime Bay on the Tasman Peninsula.
He was reported missing by friends on Thursday night after failing to complete the day trip.
A member of the public found a body, believed to belong to Mr Bester, at a boat ramp in the area on Friday morning.
It is believed Mr Bester was wearing a lifejacket and in contact with family and friends via mobile phone during the early stages of his trip.
Police say conditions were windy overnight and certainly not ideal for an untrained kayaker.
"We like to be able to be optimistic that we'll find people alive. Unfortunately in this case it hasn't occurred and it is heartbreaking," Sergeant Callum Herbert told reporters after an extensive air and sea search.
"It's been a hard night, it's been a long night."
A severe weather warning was in place for the state's south, with gusts up to 100km/h forecast.
Mr Bester's green kayak was discovered not far from his body.
