School teacher avoids prison after having sex with 15-year-old boy

A teacher has avoided jail after she was found guilty of having sex with a 15-year-old boy.

Corissa McCalister, 22, a former teacher at Steubenville Catholic Central High School in the US state of Ohio, was driving the student to an athletics event on March 30 when she pulled the car over and had sex with him, WTRF reports.

McCalister was the head cross country coach of the school at the time of the offence. It was also her first year of teaching.

In April, she was charged with two counts of sexual battery for having sex after the boy’s mum contacted police.

McCalister made a plea agreement. She initially pleaded not guilty.

Judge T Shawn Hervey told the 22-year-old she had “held a position of trust and responsibility” which was “violated”, The Steubenville Herald-Star reported.

Mr Harvey added McCalister is now an “ex-teacher” which will remain permanent. He said the family of the victim were aware of the plea deal and of a possible sentence.

The former teacher’s lawyer Dennis McNamara told the court his client graduated university and got a teaching license at 21 which was “very young” and “pretty advanced” in terms of maturity.

He added she will continue to undergo counselling.

Instead of jail time, the former teacher was sentenced to two years’ probation, 80 hours of community service and is now a registered sex offender for the rest of her life.
