Sandra Lee has made a name for herself as a popular and highly rated television host, lifestyle expert, and author of nearly 30 best-selling books. Now, as an additional 130 million people are pushed to the brink of starvation due to COVID-19, she has something new on her plate.

Announced by the United Nations on the eve of World Hunger Day, Lee will join the Board of Directors for the World Food Program USA, a nonprofit organization that fights global hunger. In her role on the board, Lee will focus on advocacy, outreach and new program initiatives, including the "next gen," youth board to mobilize a new generation of hunger advocates and organize mission trips to hard-hit areas. She'll also call on her vast celebrity chefs to join in on the fundraising effort.

"Today we are not just in a health crisis, we are In a food crisis,” Lee tells Good Housekeeping. “People dying from hunger is unacceptable, unnecessary and should be a most important priority.”

But Lee is no stranger to humanitarian work. In fact, she has dedicated most of her life to the causes close to her heart. For a decade, she served as the national spokesperson for No Kid Hungry. She also co-founded the Los Angeles chapter of UNICEF and works closely with the Elton John AIDS Foundation and God's Love We Deliver. For her philanthropy, she has been awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award, the Eleanor Roosevelt Medal of Honor, among other honors.

After battling breast cancer in 2015, Lee extended worked with her then-partner, New York governor Andrew Cuomo on a $91 million effort to provide an advanced cancer-screening program for residents of the state.

“I have worked with Sandra for many years and have seen how she has successfully tied her professional career with her philanthropy," Caryl Stern, Executive Director of the Walton Family Foundation told Good Housekeeping. "She strongly believes that no child should go hungry and joining the WFP USA board will certainly help those suffering."

Lee joins former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle, former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman, eBay chief compliance officer Molly Finn and other distinguished members on the World Food Program USA board.

"Absolutely no child or family should go hungry," Lee says. “I am going to personally put much of my time and energy into helping the World Food Programme build a strong brand in the US while also working to raise the vital funds needed to keep people alive."
