Salmonella cases from Adelaide bakery chain rises to 15

The number of confirmed salmonella cases linked to a northern suburbs Vietnamese bakery chain in Adelaide has risen to 15, with 11 people hospitalised.

On Thursday SA Health revealed it was investigating a cluster of salmonella cases linked to three Angkor Bakery stores.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Nicola Spurrier, said on Thursday there were 11 confirmed cases reported to SA Health in people who had eaten Vietnamese rolls from the three bakeries.

She added that of those cases, nine people had been hospitalised.

“SA Health authorised officers, in conjunction with local council Environmental Health Officers, have inspected stores at Springbank Plaza (Burton), Hollywood Plaza (Salisbury Downs) and Blakes Crossing (Blakeview),” Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Nicola Spurrier, said in a media release on Thursday.

Environmental and food samples were taken from all the stores.

Cleaning and sanitising procedures were also evaluated and improved. They will continue to be observed.

The owner of the Adelaide bakery issued a tearful apology on Thursday, fearing the outbreak could spell the end for her bakeries.

“I’m very, very sorry that I didn’t know what we did wrong. I don’t know who supply, and I don’t know how it happened,” Owner Lakhina Eung said.

An apology note to customers has also been displayed on the bakeries’ doors.

“There has been an unexpected incident regarding our Asian meat rolls,” it begins.

“We have no intention of harming anyone,” the letter continues.

“For those who have been affected, no words can describe how bad we feel about this incident and the impact it has on any families.”

Test results revealing the exact source might be known later on Friday, or possibly early next week.

“Early investigations indicate the cases could be linked to raw egg butter, pate or BBQ pork ingredients,” Dr Nicola Spurrier said on Thursday.

“The businesses complied with a council request on Tuesday to cease using these ingredients and, from today, the businesses have agreed to cease selling all Vietnamese rolls until the source has been identified.”

Symptoms of salmonella usually last for three to seven days and can include fever, vomiting, headaches, stomach cramps, loss of appetite and diarrhoea.

SA Health says anyone who experiences these symptoms and might be concerned should consult their doctor and be tested.
