Anglers encounter swarm of hungry sharks after lacklustre catch off SA coast

A boat load of fishermen had an extraordinary tug-of-war with a school of sharks off the South Australian coast.

The anglers say while the fishing was slow, the close encounter with the frenzied bronze whalers more than made up for it.

They were 35 kilometres out from Victor Harbor with hardly a fish in sight all day.

Then they started getting bites.

“Aw we got one… Yes!” shouted one angler.

The three fishos were on their way back to shore on Friday when they came across the feeding frenzy.

After losing several tunas to the sharks, they decided they would catch the sharks on video.

But the boaties almost bit off more than they could chew.

“Jesus Christ, he nearly pulled me in!” one shouted.

With only a tuna tail left, the sharks quickly turned on the fishing boat.

The three mates escaped unscathed but their outboard motor has some scratches where the sharks chomped on the propeller.

“They are not happy with us,” one angler noted in the video.

Crewman Rob East said it was an unbelievable experience.

"Oh, it was spectacular. It was really up there with one of the most exciting times I’ve ever had on the water,” he recalled.

The fishing buddies counted around twenty bronze whaler sharks, the largest around three metres long.
