A building has started to collapse and livestock are being moved as firefighters battle a large blaze that's engulfed a South Australian abattoir.
About 100 MFS and CFS firefighters on Wednesday night were at the Thomas Foods International facility at Northern Heights north of Murray Bridge.
Authorities were alerted to the fire on Lagoon Road at about 7pm.
The MFS said firefighters had to use defensive strategies against the flames after a partial structure collapse, with water from a nearby lagoon being pumped.
Management have also started moving livestock to safer ground.
The public are being asked to avoid the area and a smoke advice alert is in place for nearby suburbs.
Residents are being told to keep doors and windows closed.
"The emergency is causing smoke to drift across Northern Heights and surrounding suburbs," an advice alert reads.
Thomas Foods International is Australia's largest, 100 per cent family-owned meat processing company, which has annual revenue in excess of $1 billion.
