Muslim man punched at SA mosque 'for not having an opinion'

A Muslim man was punched in the face during worship for reportedly not engaging in a debate on Islam when provoked by a man who entered the Adelaide mosque.

CCTV footage from Friday night shows the pair engaging in conversation at the foyer of Marion Mosque, in Park Holme, before one man takes a swing at the worshipper.

The footage shows the victim holding his face in pain, while the attacker stands around, watching.

Islamic Society of SA president Ahmad Zreika told the ABC the mosque welcomed members of the public to “open meaningful dialogue” in an effort for the Islamic community to become more inclusive.

The victim was attacked when he refused to share an opinion about the Israeli Palestinian conflict, Mr Zreika said.

The worshipper was asked about Jerusalem’s conflict with the United States, he said.

"The Muslim man says, 'I don't want to be involved in this' and the other man said 'You should have an opinion' and punches him.”

Mr Zreika said the mosque has been a target of several attacks throughout the year, with members of the public throwing eggs and rubbish at the building, and yelling abuse at women wearing hijab.

He said the Muslim community was saddened by the abuse, and wanted to share the footage to demonstrate to the public that this behavior was “unacceptable”.

Police said the victim received facial injuries and paramedics treated him at the scene.

It is believed the pair were not known to one another, and police were making inquiries to find him.
