Car ploughs into shoppers at Sydney mall

A mother and her one-year-old baby are lucky to be alive after an out-of-control mowed them down outside a Sydney shopping centre.

Horrific vision showed the moment the car mounted the curb and collected five pedestrians in Chatswood.

There was no time to get out of the way and in the space of seconds, shoppers were flung into the air.

Bruised and still shaken, Julie Zhu was pinned between the car and the glass doors of a Thai lunch shop.

"It's just like a horror movie, first thing I think it's a terror attack, second, I think I'm gonna die,” she told 7 News.

"You don't know how painful it was actually, my whole body.”

A 22-year-old woman was the most seriously injured, seen hitting her head on a metal sign and falling to the concrete - almost motionless.

Store owner Paul Goulding was first to her side.

"I cleared her airways, turned her sideways, made sure she was still breathing,” he said.

The 50-year-old man behind the wheel is thought to have suffered a blackout.

Business owners at the busy shopping strip insist this proves the need for bollards to be installed on pathways, as an extra buffer to prevent this happening again.

"Lucky this wasn't on a Thursday afternoon or Friday afternoon… it would be chocka block full of people,” Mr Goulding said.

Willoughby Council has confirmed its reviewing pedestrian safety.
