Son dies in fire after father runs in to try to save him in Adelaide

A 12-year-old boy has tragically died in an Adelaide house fire after his father desperately tried to save him.

Firefighters were called to the home in Netherby, an inner-southern suburb, on Monday morning and were faced with a number of challenges, including trying to rescue a group of international students trapped at the rear of the building.

The child's father, aged in his 60s, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

He is believed to have suffered serious burns after trying to run back inside and save his son.

"The rear of the premises was heavily involved in fire and there was very narrow access," Commander Rainer Kiessling from the SA Metropolitan Fire Service said.

"So the intensity for the fire was keeping the students trapped in the yard."

Firefighters managed to rescue the students, but the boy perished inside.

Six people managed to escape the home and another two were pulled out of the house by firefighters, fire authorities said

It took 35 firefighters half an hour to bring the blaze under control with the home suffering extensive damage.

Police and fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
