Detectives doubt witness accounts after death of Victor Harbor man shot in the head

A young Victor Harbor father shot in the head during a day out with friends has died.

Major Crime detectives are trying to get to the bottom of what went wrong, but say witnesses are not telling the truth.

Bailey Davenport, 21, was a devoted father and partner who worked at a local tyre shop and played football for Victor Harbor.

Police say he set off on Sunday afternoon with three men and a woman to cut wood in a forest at Parawa, 40kms west of Victor Harbor.

They took a firearm, and just after 3.30pm Mr Davenport was shot in the head, allegedly by 28-year-old Hayden Fenton.

Panicking, the group drove him to hospital, where he received emergency treatment before being flown to Flinders Medical Centre.

Today Mr Davenport lost his fight.

"I know he's dearly loved by his family and all here at the football club," Victor Harbor football president Peter Hooper said.

"It's rocked us all here."

Police have been interviewing the four survivors of the incident but say they are struggling to establish exactly how Mr Davenport died because their stories contradict each other.

"Until we unravel exactly what occured, the charge of murder is certainly on the table," SA Police inspector Greg Hutchins said.

Officers returned to Parawa to search for the missing gun, while Mr Fenton faced Christies Beach Court charged with an act to endanger life.

He remains in custody while detectives piece together exactly what happened.
