Man who shot his neighbour's cat four times with a bow and arrow has been spared jail

A man who shot his neighbour's ginger cat four times with a bow and arrow has avoided jail.

On Wednesday, Adelaide man Shannon Aubert, 35, left court with a six month suspended sentence for shooting cat George in July 2016.

George had strayed onto Aubert's property and he said he thought the animal was feral, even though it was wearing a collar.

His owner, Imogen Bizilis, said she could not believe her pet's killer had been spared jail.

"I wish that he had of gone to jail. I don't think the penalties for animal abuse are harsh enough," she said.

"He had broken bones. The arrow had perforated his bowel and his liver.

"He would have been in unimaginable pain."

The Adelaide magistrate said the shooting of the animal was "inhumane" and questioned why Aubert had a bow and arrow in the first place.
