'What the hell?' Elderly driver caught going the wrong way on Adelaide freeway

A terrifying freeway mishap has been caught on camera, with an elderly motorist appearing to drive the wrong way along an Adelaide Hills freeway.

Seven News has obtained dramatic new dashcam video of the horror drive on the South Eastern Freeway yesterday.

The 70-year-old behind the wheel reportedly travelled an astonishing 45kms in the wrong direction, from Murray Bridge to past Mount Barker.

“What the hell? What the hell?" a motorist can be heard on the video asking himself in disbelief.

"Someone was going the other way. We are still on the freeway are we not? Holy s''''t!”

Incredibly, the driver managed to avoid a major accident, but she side-swiped a ute. Picture: 7 News

There were several close calls, with drivers forced to swerve out of the way before the woman eventually side-swiped a ute.

The woman was taken to hospital for assessment.
