Sword-carrying man 'trying to pawn weapon' before arrest in Adelaide CBD

The man arrested at gunpoint in Adelaide’s CBD says he was carrying a metre-long medieval sword because he wanted to pawn it.

Jay Brant was arrested on Bank Street on Sunday morning after witnesses saw him carrying the sword on the street.

Brant’s relatives arrived in court as support for the 38-year-old.

“There was no intention of him doing anything bad to anyone, I know that for a fact,” one relative said.

Appearing in court on Monday, Brant argued he planned on selling the sword for money but the pawn shop was closed.

“Everyone’s seen him walking around with a sword and they’ve overestimated and taken it out of proportion,” Brant’s niece said.

The magistrate described the decision to take the sword into a public place was “foolish” and could be considered “provocative and potentially dangerous”.

Brant was granted bail on charges including carrying an offensive weapon and breaching bail, but the conditions ban ban him from entering Hindley Street.

But he was remanded in custody on another matter.

He’ll reappear in court for the sword charges in April.
