Highway crash that killed daughter while mum 'high on ice'

A mother who killed her young daughter in a shocking freeway crash has asked to be spared jail, saying she is already "imprisoned in her mind".

Vision of the November 2013 smash has been provided to the South Australian district court as prosecutors seek to have Kylie Hie locked up.

High on ice, she was returning from a funeral in Mount Gambier when her van slammed into the back of a B-double near the Heysen Tunnels.

Her four-year-old daughter Charlotte was in the front seat and didn't stand a chance.

The 34-year-old and her supporters emerged from court on Friday in no mood for media attention, throwing water on the press pack.

Hie was earlier sobbing in the dock as she heard an emotional victim impact statement from the girl's father, her ex-husband Aaron Hie.

"November 20 was the last time I heard my beautiful daughter say 'I love you daddy.'

"It wasn't an accident but a crash that should never have happened," he said.

The father added that his daughter's life ended "negligently, not by another woman, but by her own mother".

In a rebuke to his ex-wife, he said, "Charlotte did not have a choice, but you certainly did."

The court heard Hie had an extensive driving record, which included speeding, drink driving and driving while disqualified.

Hie's lawyer asked the judge to show mercy when considering her sentence, saying she was already "imprisoned in her mind".

But the prosecutor insisted neither home detention nor a suspended sentence would be appropriate for such a serious crime.

Hie will be sentenced in April.
