Detective Superintendent Des Bray said he was known to police, having been in some trouble between 2002 and 2006.

Some cannabis seedlings were also found at his house in 2014.

"Police have an open mind as to what may have happened but are investigating the possibility that in recent times he may have got involved with the wrong people again," Supt Bray said.

"The possibility of this being a drug-related murder cannot be excluded."

Detective Superintendent Des Bray said Mr Modesti was known to police.

Two weeks before he went missing Mr Modesti travelled to Bangkok to attend a building expo, returning to Adelaide on May 6.

His last interaction with anyone came late on May 8, when he spoke by phone with his partner.
