Woman burned unfaithful boyfriend's penis with hair straightener

A South Australian woman has been given a suspended sentence after admitting to using a hair straightener to burn her unfaithful boyfriend’s penis.

Bronwyn Joy Parker, 22, appeared in the Mount Barker District Court, to the east of Adelaide, for sentencing on September 11, over the bizarre domestic violence case which left her partner with third degree burns in December 2013.

She had previously pleaded guilty to recklessly causing severe harm.

In sentencing Parker, Judge Paul Muscat said the case was one of the most unusual he had encountered.

“He was unfaithful to you and had spent two nights with his ex-girlfriend and had sex with her,” he said.

The court was told Parker’s boyfriend had agreed to the ‘punishment’ and had presented his penis to her before the incident. The pair had previously agreed she would burn his testicles with a hair straightener if he was unfaithful.

“You took his penis in your hand and then, with the other, you placed the straighteners on either side of the shaft of his penis before squeezing them momentarily,” he said.

“I need not here say anything of the pain and shock which he then experienced.”

The man was treated at the Royal Adelaide Hospital Burns Unit in 2013 when he finally sought treatment for his injuries. The court heard his penis became swollen and blackened following the incident.

The injuries required ongoing care and were expected to take about two years to heal. Scarring would remain for life, the court heard.

When interviewed by police, Parker said both she and her boyfriend considered the action a joke, but did not understand how serious the injuries would be.

“To be honest I thought it would be like, like how you get sunburn, like it would go a little bit red but nothing serious,” she said.

“To start off with, it looked brown around the outside and it didn’t look too bad, it just looked as if you had cooked a piece of meat.”

According to court documents, Parker met her boyfriend several years ago via Facebook. A relationship developed, however, she soon grew suspicious of her partner and his relationship with his ex-girlfriend in particular.

Her concerns led to the pair discussing how they would handle future issues of infidelity, leading to the eventual burning of his penis.

Parker was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.
