Freight train derails at Keswick

Motorists in Adelaide's south can expect delays today after a freight train derailed at Keswick.

Four rail carriages were knocked off of the track at about 8am this morning following a minor collision, leaving two level crossings blocked in surrounding suburbs.

South Australia Police has issued a statement urging motorists to find new routes and to avoid the crossings at Leader Street, Forestville, and Victoria Street, Goodwood.

Traffic delays are expected to last several hours.

A spokeswoman for the Australian Rail Track Corporation said no one was hurt in the minor collision and work is underway to clear the area.

"There were no injuries and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau are on site and investigating," she said.

"ARTC is focused on clearing the track as quickly as possible and is working with SA Police and Passenger Transport Services to clear two level crossings at Leader Street and Victoria Street as quickly as possible which are currently activated."

She said the derailment was the result of a collision when an intermodal freighter hit the rear end of another train, causing the four carriages to leave the tracks.
