Brothers allegedly wielding samurai sword, kitchen knife face court for attempted murder of man in SA

Three brothers who allegedly armed themselves with a samurai sword, a large kitchen knife and a metal pole before attacking a man from the Anangu Pitjantatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands have faced court.

Prosecutor Mark Norman opened the trial in Adelaide's Supreme Court and urged the jury to find Arthur, Colin and Kevin Treloar, guilty of attempting to murder Atu Campbell in South Australia's Port Augusta during March last year.

He said Mr Campbell almost died in the attack.

"Atu Campbell, who was himself unarmed, received significant wounds to his back, his head and to his right arm and wrist," Mr Norman said.

"He suffered lasting nerve damage and loss of movement to his right arm."

The prosecutor said the victim was from the APY Lands in SA's far north and had been visiting his niece in Port Augusta, along with his partner and three-year-old son, when he was attacked.

The niece previously had a relationship with one of the accused men.

Mr Norman said it was unclear why the victim was set upon.

"There may have been some sort of disagreement about alcohol, which was running out," he said.

He said Kevin Treloar, 21, was heard saying: "I'm gonna get my brothers for you. We're going to come around, fu***** kill you".

Mr Norman said all hell then broke loose.

"Other members of Atu Campbell's family, friends who have armed themselves with pieces of wood and a pair scissors, they became involved," he said.

"There's shouting, there's screaming."

The prosecutor said the victim needed surgery in Adelaide.

All three brothers denied attempting to murder Mr Campbell, but Arthur Treloar, 34, admitted to the lesser charge of causing serious harm with intent.

The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.
