An Adelaide study is investigating whether plant fats can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in sufferers of type two diabetes.

CSIRO researchers want to know if plant sterol-based spreads can help lower cholesterol levels in people with or at high risk of type two diabetes.

“These products are available in the market place now, but we don’t know if they work well for everybody,” Professor Manny Noakes from the CSIRO said:

It comes in the form of margarine, which is portion packed for study volunteers.

Participants will consume either the active product or a placebo twice a day for six weeks.
