Hot and windy day ahead for SA

Total fire bans have been declared in three fire districts in South Australia, with the temperature set to hit 40C in some parts of the state today.

Adelaide has a forecast maximum temperature of 34C today, with the mercury set to rise even higher tomorrow with an expected top of 36C.

The last time the city was that hot during October was in 2006, when the mercury climbed to 38C.

By 2.30pm, the temperature in Adelaide had just ticked over 31C.

On the state's West Coast, the temperature is expected to reach 40C today while Renmark in the Riverland is expecting to hit 35C.

Total fire bans have been declared today in the North West Pastoral, West Coast and Flinders districts, which have all been given a severe fire danger rating.

The hot and windy conditions have Country Fire Service crews on alert, with forecast dry lightning adding to the concern.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for damaging winds for the West Coast and North West Pastoral districts.

The early burst of warm weather has also prompted warnings from health authorities, urging people to remember to take precautions to avoid sunstroke and dehydration.
