Ukulele clubs spring up around Adelaide

From Hawaii to the suburban pubs of Adelaide, the musical influence of the humble ukulele continues to spread.

'Uke' appreciation societies are popping up everywhere as local baby boomers prove once again that from little things, big things grow.

Ukulele lovers from various groups around Adelaide are even planning a ukulele picnic in the parklands later this year, with more than 200 strummers are expected to attend.

The instrument harsh back to the 1880s when the Portugese brought something similar to Hawaii, roughly translated, it means 'jumping flea'.

"Most people want a bit of poetry or a bit of beauty in their life and signing songs with other people, making up songs, playing ukulele, I think those things are attractive," ukulele player John Mansfield said.
