Adelaide traffic jams flagged to drivers on smartphone

Adelaide traffic jams will be flagged to drivers on their smartphones via a new website, Traffic SA.

The Transport Department hopes Traffic SA will help head off traffic congestion and let motorists plan more efficient trips.

The website shows the locations of roadworks and other incidents, and indicates likely time delays using colour coding.

Traffic management executive Paul Gelston said Traffic SA had been attracting about 1,500 hits daily but exceeded 10,000 when flooding affected parts of Adelaide back in the middle of February.

He said the website was using mapping technology to show Transport Department information as well as details from the roadworks database of Adelaide's Traffic Management Centre.

"One of the great features of Traffic SA is the ability to display the excess traffic flow delay in minutes," he said.

Mr Gelston said the Adelaide map would show coloured lines on roads, with:

  • yellow indicating an expected delay of up to three minutes;

  • orange for greater than three minutes but under six minutes; and

  • red showing expected delays of more than six minutes.

Mr Gelston said Traffic SA was now optimised for a range of devices, including personal computer, smartphone and tablet.

He said the Department planned to add more features soon, including the locations of planned roadworks in addition to current ones.

Motorists were warned not to check their smartphone or tablet when driving.
