University of Adelaide makes it into the top 100 world ranking for the first time

The University of Adelaide has made it into the latest rankings of the world's top 100 universities for the first time.

It is in 100th place on the QS Top Universities Rankings, which measure each institution across four criteria: research, teaching, employability and international outlook.

The Australian National University was the top-ranked university in the country, coming in at 25th in the world.

University of Adelaide vice chancellor Professor Warren Bebbington said with 10,000 universities being ranked, it was an achievement to be in the top 1 per cent.

"We were 104 last year, so this is not a huge change," he said.

"But we've put a lot of effort into recruiting outstanding researchers and I think that's made the difference."

Professor Bebbington said the ranking would improve the university's international student intake.

"It is very clear that student inquiries go up when your rankings go up," he said.

However Professor Bebbington said he did not believe rankings provided an accurate guide for students.

"If you want to find the best law school, to be looking at a ranking that might only be based on medical research, is not particularly relevant," he said.

"The three top ranking systems in the world are very widely read as consumer advice and so we have little choice but the play the game."

Australia has eight universities in the top 100, compared to seven last year.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was the top ranked university in the world, followed by the University of Cambridge and the Imperial College of London.
