Rock star: How much is metorite worth?

A Murray Bridge man claims he has found a meteorite that's worth more than a million dollars.

7News had the rare rock examined by an expert, and the results are out of this world.

The South Australian pensioner who found the heavy rock doesn't want to be identified, fearing he will be targeted by thieves.

He discovered it while four wheel driving with mates and said: “I just knew it was something special as soon as I saw it, you know the way it was glowing at me.”

7News invited Adelaide University geologist Vic Gostin to give his unbiased opinion.

Our expert said: “I'm impressed - the criteria for a meteorite that I'm familiar with, having a very thin skin which shows that it's been molten, it's glassy.

He says, in terms of rarity, it could be in the top point one per cent of all meteorites found.

“The value increases the more rare it becomes and this looks like a pretty rare one.”

The owner also claims there is an alien cast in the stone.

He added: There's an arm on each side, you'll be able to see a leg as well, a little body here with a head.

“Where in the world do you know a meteorite with a hall mark of a martian on it?”

He is now ready to travel the world to find the highest bidder.

“Definitely open to offers and if it's a good enough offer, you bring your suit case and you can take the rock with.”
