Two killed in Augusta Highway smash

Two women have been killed in a sickening two-car crash about 25 kilometres south of Port Augusta.

The two cars collided on the Augusta Highway just after 7.30am and the victims died at the scene.

Police said the red car was travelling north towards Port Augusta when it tried to overtake a petrol tanker.

“They’ve pulled out, some reason lost control and swerved before becoming entangled with the truck,” Bvt Sgt Wayne Liebich said.

The car bounced off the semi and slammed into an oncoming ute.

“The passenger was ejected and the driver was found deceased in the seat,” Bvt Sgt Liebich said.

It is believed they were Italian tourists.

A third woman in the car was rushed to hospital.

Both the driver of the ute and the truck suffered minor injuries.

The crash forced the closure of the Augusta Highway in both direction, leaving trucks banked up several hundred metres along the road.

It takes South Australia’s road toll to 42, compared with 53 at the same time last year.
