Epic postie run delivering urgent men's health message

A dozen lads from Strathalbyn, a town south of Adelaide, are taking on an epic postie run spanning Australia to deliver an urgent message.

They want men to speak up when they are in trouble to save other communities from the devastation of suicide.

“We’re just trying to deliver the message that it’s okay for guys to communicate with each other,” Organiser Nick Grosvenor said.

The men taking part are bonded by the shadow of suicide.

The suicide of 18-year-old Jarrad Cooney rocked the town of Strathalbyn in 2011.

In the following two years, a spate of young men taking their lives prompted the community to form a support network.

And these boys want to do their bit to spread the message.

“Postie bikes are affordable, they’re economical, we can get to Darwin really on about $300,” Mr Grosvenor said.

They will be making the trip to Darwin via William Creek and Ayers Rock, along with many other communities facing similar challenges.

Those involved in the Beyond the Darkness Postie Run have now doubled their goal of raising 10,000 for Beyond Blue.

“The programs we’ve run over the last 18 months have had a real impact,” Bill Stockman from Menswatch said.

If you would like to support the lads, you can get involved via the Beyond The Darkness Postie Run Facebook page.
