Holden cuts back car production at Elizabeth

Workers at Holden’s Elizabeth plant have been told production at the factory will be scaled back between now and the end of the year.

They were told yesterday that they will be forced to take days off, including all of next week.

Holden calls them ‘market response days’ and says they account for less than four per cent of its annual production.

It is hoped the temporary halts will allow current stock to be sold before production begins on the new VF model Commodore.

John Camillo from the automotive union told 7News: “You can’t have too many cars in the paddock accumulating dust and then not be able to sell them down the track.”

Workers say the situation has left them unsure about their future.

Affected employees will be paid 60 per cent of their wage on days of non production, but they can use annual leave to top up their pay.
