South Australia has reported a fall in new COVID-19 cases with the number of people in hospital also dropping.

Test results revealed 3070 new infections on Thursday, down from 3493 the previous day.

The number of people in hospital also dropped marginally from 125 to 123.

Twelve people remain in intensive care with one person on ventilation.

Premier Steven Marshall said while there were some "green shoots" case numbers would likely increase again and the peak in the current outbreak was yet to come.

"In fact, I don't think any state has got anywhere near the peak," he said.

"We are still reasonably confident that will be before the end of this month, but we don't have a final number.

"The good thing is that when we look at the trajectory (in SA) at the moment, it seems to be improving and not getting worse like it is in many other states.

"It's still worrying, I've got to be clear, we're not out of the woods by a long way.

"But there are lots of green shoots, signs that the restrictions we put in place have helped us avoid the disaster like we're seeing in other places around the country and around the world."

Thursday's cases brought the total number of active infections in SA to 21,215

That includes 308 health workers while a further 265 health staff were at home as close contacts or for other reasons, putting pressure on hospital and ambulance services.

Mr Marshall also confirmed on Thursday that close contacts in SA would soon transition from needing to have a PCR test to taking two rapid antigen tests supplied free by the government.

Officials were working through arrangements to determine distribution sites for those tests, which should be taken on days one and six.

"We'll be in a position in the next day or so to identify where those sites will be," the premier said.
