An adult from suburban Adelaide has contracted meningococcal disease, with the case coming after the death of a young child earlier this week.

SA Health says the 28-year-old has been admitted to hospital in a stable condition.

Seven of the person's contacts have been provided precautionary antibiotics.

On Tuesday, officials reported the death of a two-year-old child from rural SA, the state's first death from the disease this year.

In that case, 15 people who had contact with the child were being treated with antibiotics.

There have been eight of meningococcal disease in SA so far this year compared to six at the same time last year.
