Russia's fencers take gold, silver in women's sabre

Rio de Janeiro (AFP) - Fencer Yana Egorian claimed Russia's second gold of the Rio Olympics defeating compatriot Sofiya Velikaya 15-14 a closely contested women's sabre final on Monday.

The defeat was doubly heartbreaking for seven-time world champion Velikaya as she also missed out on gold in the final in London four years ago.

Ukraine's Olga Kharlan claimed bronze with a 15-10 win over France's Manon Brunet.
