Around 20-25 thousand Russian soldiers are attempting to storm Chasiv Yar and the surrounding areas, Nazar Voloshyn, the Khortytsia operational-strategic group spokesperson said, the Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported on April 22.

"Facing us in the Chasiv Yar sector are Russian paratroopers from Russia's 217th Guards Airborne Regiment of the 98th Guards Airborne Division," Voloshyn said.

The Russian armed forces are persistent in their attempts to capture the town, disregarding losses in both personnel and equipment, he said.

"The Russian army does not currently occupy the city," Voloshyn said.

"We maintain control. The situation around the town is challenging, but controlled. Our defenders are receiving reinforcements and fortifying the front line."

Russia continually and systematically storms Ukrainian positions but fails to hold them, eventually retreating, he said.

"They launch attacks without consolidating their positions," Voloshyn said.

"They storm and then retreat. It's as if the enemy is conducting reconnaissance, identifying vulnerabilities to exploit. However, the Ukrainian Forces respond with devastating blows."

Donetsk front situation

Russians are resorting to tactics that helped them capture Avdiivka in an attempt to advance towards Chasiv Yar – a city west of Bakhmut.

Ukrainian defenders' positions are heavily targeted with artillery and fire from Russian aircraft and helicopters, the Institute for the Study of War reported on April 10.

The situation on the Eastern front has significantly worsened in recent days, Commander-in-Chief of the AFU, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on April 13.

The monitoring portal DeepState reported that Russians had occupied the village of Bohdanivka and advanced near Chasiv Yar. However, the Defense Ministry refuted reports of Bohdanivka's occupation.

Russia's top military leadership has tasked its soldiers with capturing Chasiv Yar by May 9.

Russia is concentrating efforts to breach the defense and advance towards the Siversky Donets – Donbas canal to create conditions for further progress towards Kramatorsk, Syrskyi announced on April 14.

Ukrainian military officials previously warned that if Chasy Yar falls under Russian control, an offensive towards Kostiantynivka, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, and Slovyansk could follow.
