Russell Howard has explained why stand-up comics in particular love a curry.

Guesting on the latest episode of Saturday Kitchen on BBC One, the former Mock the Week panelist was asked by host Matt Tebbutt why the combination of spicy sauces, rice, onion bhajis and poppadoms seem to be so popular with professional funny folk.

Apparently, it's simply down to the fact Indian restaurants stay open the latest.

The pair's conversation began with Tebbutt wanting to know Howard's "food heaven and food hell".

"Any kind of curry" was his first answer, before going on to reveal that cauliflower or kimchi would be his idea of a hellish eating experience.

"OK... a lot of comedians like curry, what is that?" said Tebbutt.

Howard, who's taking his live tour around Europe, Asia and America next year, laughed back: "Probably because when we finish gigs it's the only places that are open!"

As for his thoughts on the "relatively new" Indian comedy scene, he later commented: "I went to a stand-up club last time I was there and it was incredible, you could just feel the energy. It's such a new artform there and you've got comics that are doing arenas out there that we won't have heard of but it's amazing!"

Elsewhere on Saturday, 28 December's episode, Tebbutt admitted he has no interest in conversing in the kitchen back at home.

"I presume when you're at home, you don't talk as you cook?" Howard initially asked him.

"No! I get really upset with people in the kitchen who want to chat. I just want the music on," he noted, much to the confusion of everyone on screen.

"I just like to have my music on, have a glass of wine or something like that and just bumble around. You know when you get people over and they just wanna stand and talk and they talk at you, and they say 'What's your favourite colour? What's your favourite spice?' Just questions!"

Saturday Kitchen airs on BBC One.
