Round or square? Mug's shape baffles internet - so what do you see?

Just as you thought you’d heard the end of the Laurel-Yanny debate that split the internet, a brand new conundrum has left the online world divided.

Footage of a coffee mug has been uploaded to the web leaving thousands bamboozled over its true shape.

As the cup rotates, it’s hard to tell whether its circular or square.

To make matters worse, the clip films the mug with a mirror behind, which appears to show the cup as circular and square at the same time.

As expected, the online community began losing their minds and heated discussion ensued.

“It is round on the outside but the inside of the rim is square,” one user claimed.

“Its round, I have one just like that,” another said.

“It’s a rounded square,” one diplomatic answer read.

Tony Fisher, who uploaded the video, says the mug is based on a shape devised by Japanese mathematician Kokichi Sugihara, who names the illusion as an “ambiguous cylinder”.

Online dilemmas seem to be commonplace on the web in recent years, most notably the confusion over the colour of a dress in 2015, some arguing it was gold and white while others were adamant it was black and blue.
