The grandmother of one of four police officers killed in a horrific collision in Melbourne on Wednesday night, says the rookie officer was only in his second day on the job.

Josh Prestney, 28, has been identified as one of the four officers killed in the collision on the Eastern Freeway at Kew.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Mr Prestney’s grandmother Eliza Anderson said her grandson was “so proud to serve” the community in the Victoria Police force.

Ms Anderson said he had only graduated from the police academy in November.

“He only graduated in November. He was just on a stint before being at Kew station. He had only started on this on Tuesday,” she told the Herald Sun.

“We were so proud of you. God bless Josh. Miss you forever,” Ms Anderson wrote on Facebook reported the Herald Sun.

The four on-duty police officers, including three men and a female, were killed when they were struck by a truck near the inner east suburb of Kew about 5.40pm, after officers had pulled over a Porsche travelling at high speed along the freeway.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Steven Pope, a Senior Constable at Narre Warren Police Station, and hopes to raise $500,000 for each of the four police officer’s families.

“The members were killed on the Eastern Freeway after a routine intercept when a truck collided with the members,” the Go Fund Me says.

“This is a brutal reminder of the danger police face in the course of their service, every minute of every shift.”

Victoria Police could not confirm the names of the slain police officers at this time.
