The current ruling Social Democrats and the Liberals, together with the ethnic Hungarians party and lawmakers representing the other minorities, announced late Tuesday they had reached agreement on a set of measures that include keeping the flat tax system, streamlining public administration and boosting infrastructure investment.
The statement failed to mention the Save Romania Union opposition party, which initially joined a deal to form a broad pro-European government, but recently criticized the other groups for failing to present a credible plan to improve the public finances.
A government formed by the three parties and grouping of lawmakers would still command a majority in the legislature, albeit a tighter one in the next parliament, which is scheduled to begin work on Friday.
