Rollercoaster passengers fall 10m after carriage derails

Six people have been rushed to hospital after a rollercoaster derailed, leaving riders dangling 10 metres above the ground.

Two people were ejected entirely from their car and fell when the Sand Blaster ride came off its track at an amusement park on Florida’s Daytona Beach boardwalk about 8.15 on Thursday (local time).

Miraculously, they were not seriously injured, according to local reports.

Pictures tweeted by the Daytona Beach Fire Department shows one car completely dangling off its rail as rescue crews used a ladder to free those inside.

Other riders remained trapped on the ride while technicians attempted to repair it, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

Six riders were later rushed to hospital in an unknown condition.

It is also not known what caused the derailment.

“I feel like the ride wasn’t checked well enough,” said Atlanta teen Trevor Gutierrez, who last rode on the coaster less than a year ago.

Daytona Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Sasha Staton commended the rescue team for bringing the “10 very frightened passengers” to safety.

“They were faced with dangerous conditions as they worked as fast as possible to successfully extricate everyone safely,” she told the Daytona Beach News Journal.

The popular Sand Blaster ride is a three-car, sit-down rollercoaster, which opened in August 2013.
